Save This Life Microchip? How to Re-Register It

Save This Life, an Austin, Texas–based microchip company and registry, stopped operating. In mid-February 2025, AAHA removed it from its Microchip Registry Lookup tool after reports of failed searches (AVMA News, Feb 18, 2025). Chips already in pets still scan, but the owner records linked to them can no longer be searched.

Is my dog affected?

AAHA says that if your dog's chip number starts with 991 or 900164, you may need to re-register with another registry (AAHA). If you don't know the number, ask your vet or shelter to scan your dog.

What to do

  1. Get the chip number from your paperwork or a scan.
  2. Look it up at petmicrochiplookup.org to see whether any other registry already has it.
  3. If none does, register the same chip number with a different registry, using your current contact details. You don't need a new chip (AAHA).
  4. Choose a registry from AAHA's participating list. One free option is FreePetChipRegistry.com, which says it charges no fees.

We could not find official numbers on how many pets were affected. AVMA reported it was "not immediately clear."
